The Township of Southgate is an amalgamation of The Village of Dundalk, Egremont Township & Proton Township and includes the Communities of Cedarville, Conn, Dromore, Dundalk, Holstein, Hopeville, Proton Station, Swinton Park and Varney.

Dundalk is the main commercial area in Southgate. There are about 30 businesses in the downtown. The Downtown is located at Main St. (Grey Rd. 9) and Proton St., about 1 km west of Highway 10. It has a mixture of retail and service businesses that serve the Southgate area. The post office, bank, credit union, pharmacy, restaurants, hardware store, library, police station and the economic development office are among the many businesses in Dundalk. The businesses serve the residents and businesses of the area. Dundalk is also the major agricultural business service centre with the co-op and other businesses that serve the agricultural businesses in the area. Downtown Dundalk is also the centre of worship in Southgate contains churches of many denominations. The CP Rail Trail runs right thru the downtown bringing many tourists the use the trail and visit the area. The Dundalk Santa Claus Parade and Olde Tyme Musical Jamborees are held downtown. On the way to Downtown Dundalk from Highway 10 are another dozen businesses that serve the Southgate area including the grocery store, auto repair, gas stations, the LCBO and Tim Hortons. In addition to these businesses, the area is the heart of sports and recreation for the community containing the community park, arena, fairgrounds, pool, campground and lawn bowling. The community park, arena and fairgrounds is the location for many events in Dundalk including the Dundalk Fair and Dance Competition, Dundalk Horse Shows, Family Recreation Weekend and Automotive Swap Meet. |
Villiage of Holstein |
Holstein is the main commercial centre in western Southgate and was previously the seat of government in the former Egremont Township. Holstein is an agricultural service centre. It contains the largest park is western Southgate with a traditional dam, mill pond and waterfall in the centre of Holstein which is the newest waterfall on the Grey County waterfall tour. Holstein also has one of the traditional general stores that were once common in rural areas. Many tourist events are held in Holstein including Maplefest, Canada Day Fireworks, plays from the Holstein Drama Club and the famous Non-Motorized Santa Claus Parade. |
