Rally for Rockwood

As some of you may be aware, Grey County Council is considering options on two of their long term care facilities which may result in the closure of Rockwood Terrace in Durham.

There are three County run long term care facilities within Grey County; Rockwood Terrace in Durham, Grey Gables in Markdale and Lee Manor in Owen Sound. Grey County Council hired a consultant to review the options for Grey Gables and Rockwood Terrace and have to make a decision on the options given by the consultant. The consultant’s recommendation is to close the 100 bed Rockwood Terrace in Durham and build an addition onto Grey Gables, Markdale to house the 100 beds from Rockwood. The repercussions of this decision would be devastating to West Grey/ Durham, with job losses, displacement of residents from their homes, families from their relatives, and the economic impact to the business community.

Durham has already lost the high school, almost lost the hospital and now being faced with the loss of the long-term care facility for the area’s elderly, many of whom have always lived in the area. West Grey has lost approximately 600 jobs in the last few years with the closing of Interforest and reduction of employees at Durham Furniture, and would now face the possibility of the loss of 145 employees at Rockwood.

To show your support, come to the rallies planned for Friday, May 13, and Saturday May 14, from 10 – 12 am, at Rockwood Terrace.

This is a peaceful rally to show the strength and concern of the Community to Grey County Councillors as they make this important decision on the future of Rockwood Terrace.
