Are you interested in running in the upcoming 2026 Municipal Election?

The Township of Southgate has prepared a Candidate Information Package for individuals considering running for office. The package includes important details about the nomination process, key dates, and required forms.

You can access the package and required documents using the links below.

Printed copies are also available at the Township of Southgate Administration Office, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

To file your nomination papers, please book an appointment with a member of the Clerk's department by emailing election@southgate.ca or by phone at 519-923-2110. 

The Municipal Elections Act states that documents and materials filed with or prepared by the clerk or any other election official under the Act are a public record, and until their destruction, may be inspected by any person at the clerk's office at a time when the office is open. This includes names and qualifying addresses of electors who have endorsed a nomination. 

Once a candidate has filed their nomination, the candidate's name is added to the list of registered candidates available on southgatevotes.ca. 

Campaigning is not permitted until your nomination papers have been officially filed. 

 

Candidates may file a nomination form during regular business hours for the School Board Trustees during regular business hours with the last day for filing being August 21, 2026, at 2:00pm. A prescribed fee in the amount of $100.00 payable by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order must accompany the registration/nomination form.

To run as a candidate in the municipal election you must: 

  • Be a Canadian Citizen
  • Be qualified to vote in a municipality by:
    • living in the municipality; or
    • owning or renting property in a municipality; or 
    • being the spouse of someone who owns or rents property in a municipality. 
  • Not be prohibited from holding municipal office according to Section 29 of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. 

Candidates are required to complete the following to file a nomination:

  • Nomination Paper - Form 1
  • Endorsement of Nomination - Form 2 (Requires 25 Signatures)
  • Declaration of Qualifications - Council Candidates (Form SEL3)
  • Declaration of Qualifications - School Board Candidates (Form SEL4)
  • Provide Proof of Identification
  • Release of Campaign Information (Form SEL2)

Nomination packages will be made available by the Township of Southgate in the Spring of 2026.

Once candidates have filed their nominations, a list of registered candidates will be made available on the southgatevotes.ca webpage.

The Candidate Information Session will be held on April 22, 2026 from 6:00PM to 9:00PM at the Grey County Council Chambers, with a virtual attendance option also available.
